Winchester's roots can be traced to a 1630 land grant to a group of Charlestown settlers. Those settlers ventured north and founded Waterfield and Rockfield. Much of that land became Woburn when Woburn incorporated in 1642. In 1850, after separating from Woburn, Winchester officially incorporated.

With a population of slightly more than 20,000 and lying a little less than 10 miles from Boston, Winchester is home to many professionals commuting into the city.

However, with a rich history of local commerce -- from grist mills to factories to local businesses -- Winchester also has a thriving business community.
